Finding a Full-Time Job
January 6th, 2008 by Hannah Waters

I’m now a senior at Boston University…and as the beginning of my last semester at school creeps closer and graduation date only being about 4 months away, I am finding myself constantly stressing about finding a full-time job that will be able to support me when I’m out of school (because as we all know — my parents cannot wait until I’m done with college!)

And even though I want to find that perfect company to work for and the perfect place to live, none of this is possible without the right amount of income coming my way for a entry-level position. What is even worse is that with my choice of concentration in the School of Management being Marketing, I will be getting paid far below many of my friends who chose the complete opposite direction being Finance. Although I know I made the right decision for myself considering I couldn’t stand to sit through any Finance classes…it’s also a struggle knowing that more than likely my income won’t be close to what many of my friends will be making.

I guess this is my way of (1) venting and (2) allowing others to do the same! I know there are many of you out there in the same position as myself who want that perfect job, but at the back of your mind the money consideration is ALWAYS there! haha, it always seems to bother me how much money can control our lives even when we set goals and get advice from others through our Geezeo groups and blog…it still has a way of controlling our lives and what we do!

It is hard not knowing what the future holds…and also not wanting to disappoint parents who like to remind me that I need to continue looking for a job (haha, like thats not one of the things that is always on my mind anyway!)

I must admit however, that it does help a great deal to budget and set goals for yourself. This way you are always looking towards the future and figuring out where you do and don’t have the money to spend. Soo…as I work my way into the next step in my life…I’m glad that there are sooo many other soon-to-be graduates that are going through the same stressful time looking for a job and considering whether the job and the pay are worth it. haha, I’m going to keep searching, but feel free to vent as I know there are MANY of you out there that are struggling as well. And I am open to any advice :o )

Congrats on being almost done with schol. I graduate too in May and I am super excited about it. Have faith, put your resume out there and it will find a job for you. My internship is in the Chamber of Commerce so I am betting that those contacts will give me aheads up in the job arena. Good luck to you.

As someone who has “been-there-and-done-that”, my recommendation is pretty simple: trust that you’ll find something and follow up every lead using your good manners. Yep, that sounds old-fashioned, but I can tell you from experience hiring people. You’d be amazed by how few applicants actually take the time to write customized letters, follow up, or send thank you notes. These small gestures will give you the edge — trust me, everyone thinks other people do this, but most do not!
