Complaint letters – how to do it effectively.
September 20th, 2008 by Amber Jones

I can’t read enough of the articles over at Wise Bread.  There, they live large on a small budget.  That matches my lifestyle perfectly!  Their articles are always informative and can be applied to my life in some way.

Take for instance a recent article highlighting the benefits of writing a complaint letter.  You purchase some sort of goods or services from a company, and it’s not exactly satisfactory.  Do you just deal with the loss, whether it’s a product that doesn’t meet the standards, or possibly customer service that isn’t very customer oriented?  At times, these situations can be pretty frustrating.  But should you lash out at the company, calling and fussing at everyone you get a chance to speak with?  I don’t think that will get you very far.  The original article, “The Letter Always Wins“, written by Margaret Garcia-Couoh, highlights the fact that a hand-written letter serves as an effective tool for both yourself and the company you are dealing with.  The companies try to find a way to keep you as a customer, as well as keep you happy.

“I’m not sure where he gets the extra energy to write the letters —always pleasant and detailed and not rants—but I appreciate that we have at least one family member crazy enough to believe that good companies should stand behind their products. And I shouldn’t doubt him. His letters always deliver.”

Following her lead, Paul Michael wrote of his experiences with companies such as Firestone and Deluxe Rent-a-car.  “How I got two CEOs to listen to my compaints” has some good advice at the end:

“Corporations want your custom, your repeat business and your patronage, and it’s a lot easier to keep a customer than to try and get a new one. It’s in their interests to keep you happy, you just have to make them want to keep you around. If they already think you’re a lost cause, your letter will almost certainly go in the that special in-box known as the garbage can. Best of luck.”

These articles are definitely worth checking out if you are interested in how to get some or all of your money back (or at least a replacement) due to a service or product that is not up to standard.
