6 Ways to Sell Your Stuff
October 14th, 2008 by Amber Jones

If you are like a lot of people, you don’t have the time, nor the space to have a garage/yard sale.  So what do you do with all of your clutter that is building up around your house?  Let’s look at a few ways you can utilize your internet connection and save some time.

Some of the more common places you can sell your unwanted items include eBay, Amazon, and Craigslist.

eBay says it “provides an open trading platform where the market determines the value of items that are sold. Over the years, the site has become a cultural barometer of sorts, providing a view into what objects consumers want most at any time.”  Ebay has “a presence in 39 markets, including the U.S., and approximately 84 million active users worldwide… In 2007, the total value of sold items on eBay’s trading platforms was nearly $60 billion. This means that eBay users worldwide trade more than $1,900 worth of goods on the site every second.”  So this could be a great option for those who are wanting to sell goods and are interested in opening the doors on a larger audience.

However, if you are interested in another option, you can look into Amazon.com.  Amazon.com offers their users access to millions of customers shopping on their site, no listing or credit card fees, and world class fraud protection.

More local options include Craigslist.  There you can find local classifieds and forums for more than 550 cities in over 50 countries worldwide – community moderated, and largely free.  There you can find jobs, housing, goods, services, romance, local activities, advice and so much more.

These are not the only options you have to try and make more space in your home as well as some money in your pockets.  You can also look into Freecycle, Kijiji, and Gumtree (for other countries).

Freecycle is a great place if your main concern is freeing up space in your home.  Their mission is “to build a worldwide gifting movement that reduces waste, saves precious resources & eases the burden on our landfills while enabling our members to benefit from the strength of a larger community.”

Kijiji is similar to Craigslist in that it is a free local classifieds website for your community.  On their About page, they explain their name saying ““Kijiji” (pronounced key-gee-gee) means “village” in Swahili. This word captures the essence of what we are creating—a community where members can connect with one another to exchange goods, ideas, and services.”

Gumtree covers 60 cities across 6 countries – the UK, Ireland, Poland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa – and are the UK’s biggest website for local community classifieds including flat share, flat rentals and jobs.

So whether you are wanting to create space, or a little more income, check out the above sites and see which one best fits your situation.
