Five Frugal Tips to Keep You Warm this Winter
November 14th, 2008 by Katie McCaskey

As energy costs rise it’s going to get more expensive to stay warm — particularly if you’re living in an older home or apartment. You can save money and stay warm by weatherizing your home and making it as energy efficient as possible. But that requires some money.

Here are five solid tips that require few funds. For more ideas speak with Geezeo’s frugality expert Natalie McNeal.

1 – Throw on the Warmth. Winter is “cuddling” time — and what better way to cuddle than wrapped in a blanket? Keep a throw on your favorite chair, sofa, or other easy-to-reach place so you can snuggle up and enjoy a cup of cocoa. You probably already have blankets and other bedding available. Keep them within arm’s reach. If you’re concerned about neatness keep them tucked away but located nearby.

2 – Hats off to hats. Until central heating was invented it was pretty common to have a “night cap” or other indoor-use hat to keep your head warm. Since you lose a lot of body heat through your head you’ll feel much more comfortable if go ahead and wear that knitted hat inside.

3 – No more bare feet or bare floors An inexpensive set of slippers will feel like a million bucks when it gets chilly. If you have hardwood floors you can warm them up inexpensively by purchasing odd-size carpet leftovers from your local home furnishing store. Or, if you’re crafty, you could teach yourself how to make a fashionable and practical New England rag-rug.

4 – Wrap the windows You’d be amazed by how much warmer a room can become if you layer on the window treatments. Multiple layers help to insulate from the cold panes of glass. You can frequently find inexpensive window treatments at second-hand stores. Not in style? Don’t worry. You can hang the older drapes behind your newer ones. Bonus: if you’re handy with a sewing machine you can stitch your extra layer to your fashionable front layer. Keep the windows open during the day to let in the light and close the curtains at night fall for maximum effect.
