With online banking, keeping track of all of your transactions has never been easier, but some people still don’t pay much attention to what goes in and comes out of their accounts.
There are many reasons that you should keep on top of all of your banking (mainly because this is where all of your money is involved), but there are other reasons as well…
Correct Charges
With so many charges going onto your credit and debit cards, it is easy to lose track of how much you have spent. Although debit cards draw directly from your bank account, you still want to make sure that you are keeping your spending in check so that you don’t overdraw from your account. Credit cards can be risky for everyone. You put so much money onto a card that you later have to pay back. Keeping track of your purchases and returns can help you manage your money better and make sure you don’t overspend on things you do not need. You should make it a habit to check your accounts at least once a week to make sure you haven’t spent over your budget.
Fraudulent Activity
Recently I received an e-mail from Bank of America thanking me for my recent phone call to customer service. The first thought that went through my mind is, “I didn’t call customer service lately.†However, I deleted the e-mail and moved on. A few days later I received the same e-mail so I decided it was time to check out what was going on. It turns out that it was just an error with the Bank of America systems, but for a while I was nervous that someone had gotten hold of my account information. It is best practice to always be checking up on your accounts in case anything shows up that may look funny to you. Even if you have a charge on there that is small that you don’t recognize, checking with your bank can clear up any worry you may have.
Helps You Stay Within Your Budget
Budgeting is hard stuff. Keeping within your money limits and saving for your future becomes more difficult when the economy is like it is today. However, checking your accounts continuously make sure you are still on track to make your budgeting goals. Don’t ignore how much you have spent until the end of the month when your bill arrives in the mail. Keep on top of it so that you aren’t tempted to overspend, that way you don’t have any excuse.
Making it a habit to check your banking and credit card accounts more frequently will definitely benefit you in the long run. It ensures that you haven’t overspent and that nobody is taking your money without your knowledge. Everyone makes mistakes and overspends once and a while, but if you don’t catch the mistake by checking your accounts, you will just keep on spending!
