5 Ways to Balance Your Social, Work, and Financial Life
January 30th, 2009 by Hannah Waters

It is not easy to balance your social, work, and financial life. But you’ll be much happier when you find the balance that works for you. Refrain from having one of these three aspects of your life dominate; if so, it can get you into trouble.

1.) Don’t Take Too Much Work Home – Taking work home all the time defeats the purpose. You have set hours for work in order to be able to benefit from going home and spending time with your family and friends. Obviously there are going to be very busy times when it is hard to avoid taking work home, but if you minimize the amount you take home and how often you take work home, you will find yourself much happier.

2.) Go Out With Friends – Especially when you first start your career you constantly find yourself tired and wanting to stay home and rest. However, don’t forget to have fun! Make sure you still make an effort to talk to and see your friends on a regular basis. Losing touch with those close to you because you are caught up in work is not going to be fun in the long run. If you are in a financial bind, tell your friends that you would prefer to stay in or do something cheap in order to not spend a lot of money. If they are good friends they will understand your situation.

3.) Don’t Spend If You Don’t Have – Spending if you don’t have the money to spend is one of the worst things you can do. Find cheap (or better yet FREE) things to do on the weekends. Running up a credit card bill just so you can go out and have drinks or see your friends will not benefit you in the long run when your bill arrives in the mail.

4.) Find a Job You Love – If you love your job, many times a lot of the rest falls right into place. With things so difficult in the job market right now it is hard to find a job you love and instead just settle for one that will get you by right now. However, don’t stop looking! If you are not completely happy with the job you are in continue to search other avenues. You never know, something might open up that will be just right and exactly what you are looking for.

5.) Use Your Vacation Time – Employers give you vacation time so that you don’t go crazy with work. Everyone needs a break. Get friends or family together and go on vacation. Yes, this may cost you so money but getting away can also clear your mind. Vacations do not always have to be expensive either.

Try these strategies to balance your social, work, and financial life. You may find that you end up extremely happy with the results. Everyone needs to find the balance that works for them; sometimes it just takes us a little while to reach the results you want.
