5 Ways to Pay Your Way through College
January 15th, 2009 by Hannah Waters

With the economy in a tough situation and college tuitions on the rise, it seems increasingly more difficult for young adults and their parents to be able to afford college. If you are finding that your parents are struggling to make ends meet or you would like your kids to contribute more towards their college education, try some of these things to help pay your way through college!

1. Quickie Jobs – Sometimes schools have on their website something similar to “quickie jobs.” These are jobs that you get paid for but don’t have a weekly commitment to. If you find that during school you are crazy busy some weeks and then other weeks have a lull in your schedule, you should definitely look into doing some quickie jobs. People within the college community can post jobs that they need done for them such as babysitting, painting, etc. These quick jobs can put some extra cash in your pocket when you need it most.

2. Scholarships – There are a ton of scholarships out there, you just have to search for the right ones that suit who you are as an individual. One of the biggest regrets I have during my college career is that I didn’t take the time to research and apply for scholarships. It wasn’t that I didn’t think I was eligible, I just didn’t want to take the time to do it…in other words, I was lazy! I highly suggest looking into scholarships as they can help you a great deal throughout your college career.

3. Work-Study Program – Many schools offer work-study programs in order to help students cover their tuition and educational expenses such as text books. Often these are jobs around campus that you can do while still being able to accomplish homework or study for exams that you may have coming up. They are hours that fit into your schedule and will make paying for college a little bit easier.

4. Tax Deductions – Not everyone is eligible for tax deductions while paying for college, but some are. Make sure you do some research to find out if you can get a tax deduction and save some money this year!

5. Become a Resident Assistant (RA) – For those who don’t know, a Resident Assistant is someone who lives in the dorms and regulates the floor that they live on. There are certain nights during the week that you might be required to be “on call” and you do have to follow all the rules that are required of you, including disciplinary action that may need to be taken. The hardest thing about this is that you may have to discipline someone you consider a friend, but on the flip side, the best part about it is that you receive free room and board and sometimes a little bit of extra income. Room and board are typically some of the most expensive aspects of college…get these for free and you will see your tuition go down a great amount. This will come later in your college years as you typically have to be a junior or senior to apply for this job.

College is extremely expensive but if you search out ways, you can reduce how much you pay each year or bring in some extra cash to help you pay for the years you are there. Don’t let money stand between you and your education!
