Geezeo users LOVE their iPhones. Big time. Plenty of Geezeo users log into their accounts using iPhones.

If you’re not sold on iPhones here’s another choice. But according to this critic, the Rokr is dead on arrival.

Do Geezeo users spend more on iphones, or ipods?

Friday I wondered which cost the Geezeo community more cash - iPhones, or iPods?

One could simply argue that iPhones cost more. This would be true. IPhones initially cost more. Plus, they cost more to “feed” each month thanks to cell phone fees and other subscription charges.

So how much does the Geezeo community spend on items tagged “iPhone”? The lowest spent per month was January, 2008. The average spent was $126.53. The highest month average was the previous month - December, 2007. The average Geezeo user spent $469.07/month. Could this be due to gifts purchased for themselves or others?

iPhoneScreen.jpg

Contrast this with the lower-cost iPod. Specific spending habits tagged with the phrase “iPod” had a low of $12.78/month (October, 2007) and a new high of $112.25/month (April, 2008).

But is this the whole story? Probably not. For instance, how much do Geezeo users tag as “music” spending?

I was surprised. Spending was lower than I imagined — an average of $27.72 spent each month on “music”. Of course, the “music” category could represent money spent on either device. What about other digital music players? Surely some Geezeo users prefer other brands. Or maybe they tag their spending “tunes” instead.

Also, what does this say about user-generated tags? Chances are good that items tagged “music” means downloaded music. Live events might be tagged “concert”, “goingOut”, or similar. They probably would be higher averages, too. In order to get a really accurate account you’d have to wrap together multiple personalized tags. What about money spent tagged “Apple”?

Curious about the broad spending habits of others in the Geezeo community? We’ll be featuring more factoids. Remember: we cannot see your specific account. We can only see the frequency of specific, personalized tags.

We’re waiting for the weird ones. If we see something tagged “TomCruise”, we’ll do our own sofa-jumping with statistical joy. Keep personalizing your accounts!

Power to the people!

The Geezeo community is very vocal about their preference for Dunkin’ Donuts or Starbucks coffee. (What do you think? Boston-area Dunkin — to which we’re probably biased — or environmentally-minded Starbucks? Add your comments here.)

So, if you were a betting man (or woman), here’s your next challenge. Would you guess the Geezeo community collectively spends more on iPods, or on iPhones?

iPhoneScreen.jpg

Before you decide, consider :

  • iPhones are more expensive on the front-end, but purchasing music probably happens more frequently.
  • Then again, iPhones can download and purchase music, too.
  • Still: more people can afford an iPod versus an iPhone.
  • Could be a toss-up….Ready to place you bets? Tune in Monday for the answer, and see how the statistics work.

Want to stuff the ballot box? Change your personalized spending tags to reflect “ipod” or “iphone”. For more information on tagging your accounts, check this out.

Finally - don’t forget that you can securely check your bank balances using your cell phone. Know on the go! This feature works whether you use an iPhone or not. (But if you do have an iPhone, here’s the Geezeo group dedicated to iPhone banking).

See ‘ya Monday with the results!

black Friday, free parking, and why macs rule
    By Katie McCaskey

Here it comes! So-called “Black Friday”. That’s the first Friday after Thanksgiving and traditionally the largest shopping day of the year.

So are you going to pile in the car and go get yourself some deals?

Nuh-uh. Not me. Keep me far away from the crazy crowds, thank you. There just aren’t deals good enough. I’ve become more of a “order online or go at off-hours” kind of shopper.

Which brings me to two seemingly unrelated topics: parking lots and mac computers. The first you’ll probably be searching for in vain. The second you’ll probably have on your holiday list, in some sort of Apple form (ipod, mini, laptop, or iMac, non-naughty listmakers?)

Salon posted an interesting article about…. parking lots. Specifically, that many parking lots are built to hold the huge traffic days like Black Friday. What are the economic and environmental costs of free parking? More interesting than you’d think. Makes me think twice now on the rare occasions I pay for parking.

And macs? You don’t have to look far to find Apple fanatics. While Geezeo here is an equal-opp tech shop, I’d say there are more hardcore Mac fans. And why not? Macs are awesome! But have you ever considered the economic trade-offs of buying a mac? Sure, they cost more at the onset. But: they hold their value longer, too. In this brilliant article the issue is solved once and for all… Macs are cheaper.

Which brings us to an interesting phenom happening right now. Yes, right now as we digest those big heavy holiday meals: the development of an economy where almost all goods are liquid and as a whole we move toward “auction culture”. An article and book review of “Future Shop” not to miss right here.

    Happy Thanksgiving!
(Now, go set up a Geezeo account, check your budgets…its holiday shoppin’ time!)
